Ukrainian Marriage – Traditional Rituals

By Peter Finch If you have taken the decision to marry in Ukraine, you should be prepared how the traditional ceremony looks like and what the procedures are. Probably your bride and her family will guide you carefully through this process but here is a short preliminary information. The marriage is one of the most intimate and important moments for every family. Not only the bride but her whole family takes an active part in this. Usually they invite friends and relatives who are close to the couple. A few hours before the ceremony, the groom and his family (or friends) visit the bride’s home. There they receive blessings from her father. This blessing is called Blahoslovenia and this is the formal approval for the marriage. This acknowledges the marriage in front of the parents and they agree to become one. A small trat is served and the two families leave for the ceremony. Usually the bride is already prepared for the wedding ceremony. Ukrainians do not consider it bad luck if the groom sees the bride before the wedding. The father blesses the marriage and the two families go to the city council for an administrative marriage. It is a short procedure and has formal meaning. The true traditional marriage is the one in the church. Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians. Local church authorities will require a certificate that both bride and groom have been baptized in an Orthodox Church. If you have planned the wedding ceremony you will have this arranged easily. The baptism is just a formality and can be done in a day. The guests are waiting in front of the church or inside. The bride and the groom enter the church after all the guests have taken their places inside. Unlike western traditions, the father does not give his daughter away. The young couple walks in together, arm in arm, as equals. In addition, the father has already given his blessing during the blessing. The first part of the ceremony is called Betrotal and during it, the man and the woman agree that they enter the marriage as equals. The priest blesses the wedding bands and places them on the young couple’s fingers. At an earlier stage the family have chosen two friends whose task it will be to witness the ceremony. They are called starosty and usually are older and more experienced than the bride and the groom. They lead the wedding procession and carry icons on which are depicted Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Later these icons are taken to the home of the new family and function as a spiritual center of the household. According to the Ukrainian marriage tradition the starosty generally host the ceremony and take care of the organizational activities. Their function is to guide and advise the young couple. After the bride and groom pass the church aisle, they are crowned. This is the most important moment because on this step they are married in the eyes of god. They place their hands on the gospel and exchange the vows. Then the priest guides them and they walk three times around the small altar. These are their first steps in marriage. The wedding ceremony in the church is about half an hour to an hour. There are extended rituals which can make it longer than four hours but these are too exhausting for both bride and groom and in addition the guests become nervous and tired. Do not insist on the long ceremony. If you love your bride, respect her and treat her well, you will be happy together even without God’s blessing. Ukrainians are not very religious and will tell you the same. However, the Orthodox marriage ritual is a romantic experience and if you need mystery to bond your marriage, this surely will work. Passion’s Search for Destiny

By Skye Thomas She was haunted by a man whom she had never met. He came to her in her dreams. It was not just a reoccurring dream about some random Prince Charming archetype. This guy had flaws, he was just as mixed up and lost as she was. She would wake up from a dead sleep to the sound of his voice whispering in her ear, “Look out the window.” She would argue in her half asleep stupor, “Be quiet! I’m sleeping!” Again, he would whisper, “Look out the window.” She would eventually drag herself up from the cozy comfort of her bed to gaze out the window. There was the full moon big and beautiful. It magically called to her from somewhere in the back of her soul’s oldest memories. She could feel him there, her ghostly suitor. She knew that if she spun around quickly, he would be standing there behind her, but every time she turned, there was nothing there but silence and darkness. Somewhere in the recesses of her mind, she could hear him silently promising, “Wait for me… I’ll find you if it’s the last thing I do.” She would toss and turn for the rest of the night feeling his intense presence and wrestling with the fact that he wasn’t ‘real’. As the years went on, she would learn that he did not know her name and that he called her Destiny. She began to call him Passion. She was not allowed to search for him. She was to sit still and wait. It was part of the game, part of the agreement. His challenge for this lifetime was to search for his Destiny. After all, what is Passion without Destiny? He had to learn how to recognize her. She had to learn how to wait in blind faith that he would find her. Both had to live real lives with real mates. Neither could shake the very real belief that the other one existed somewhere out there. How many times would she convince herself that the man standing in front of her was her Passion? How many times would it not be true? How would she know when it was finally him? How many women would he mistake for her? Would Passion and Destiny burn out and give up, writing it all off as just some figment of their imaginations? Do soulmates really exist? Or are we looking for an impossible ideal? A soulmate is not just someone that you love from the depth of your soul. They are not just someone that you have a karmic connection with. They are not just someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with. They are someone you miss hanging out with before you have even met. They are the one that upon first meeting you simply sigh in relief and say, “Ah there you are, I’ve been waiting for you.” There is no questioning, no ‘getting to know you’ stage. You have known them for all of eternity. You may want to share stories of your journeys and how you came to find each other, but you already ‘know’ them as well as you know yourself. You see yourself in their eyes. You understand them on a soul level because you share the same source. Unfortunately, it is not always a blissful experience. Most of us are not ready to meet our other halves because we are not even ready to look ourselves in the mirror. Until you can truly love and accept yourself, then you will not be able to love and accept your soulmate. They are not some fantasy person sent to save you from the ups and downs of real life. They will not make your life a magic perfect delight. They will simply love you on a level that is unlike any other. If you do not hear the call of a long lost soulmate, count yourself as blessed. You have the freedom to love anyone you choose. You get to make any kind of match that pleases you. Do not try to force a soulmate relationship. Be content in knowing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, doing exactly what you are meant to do. If on the other hand, you do hear your Passion calling, or you see Destiny in your dreams, then my prayers go out to you my dear. For yours is that path of finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Don’t ask me to tell you if they’re worth the hunt. Can you bring yourself to give up the hunt even if you tried? Only you can gauge your ability to silence that cosmic voice calling you to hold out for that certain person that only you will recognize. Only you know what it’s going to take to find them. Perhaps the angels will smile upon the two of you and help with some old fashioned happenstance. Perhaps you will telepathically connect and find your way to each others’ arms. Perhaps you were just meant to experience the longing. Perhaps you will go through some bad relationships first so that when you find your Destiny, she’ll be that much sweeter and more appreciated. Nobody knows for sure how it will play out. But I believe that on some level, deep down, you know. Did you already meet your soulmate and choose to walk away from each other? Was the intensity too much? Did it scare you? Was it overwhelming? Was it too hard? Will you have a second chance with them later down the road? Will you miss them forever? Yeah, probably. Will you learn something about unconditional love from them? Yeah, probably. Did you find each other and recognize they shared the same soul as you? Did you hold on tight? Count yourselves as the very rare and incredibly blessed. Cherish the gift of finding yourself in another’s eyes and seeing just how beautiful you are. Secrets to Gorgeous Sedu Prom Hairstyles Revealed

By Mary Anne Lionel Prom occasions are always the topic of the season. We usually have at least one prom occasion, party, or night out to look forward to every month. Life would be dull and joyless without weddings, birthdays, formal occasions, and friends parties that take our thoughts away from everyday routine and create good mood for the rest of the month. But these events may be a source of our stress as well, when choosing the right dress or hairstyle to wear in order to look special and unique. So, if you want to look pretty on your friends party or simply irresistible at your prom, there is a quick, effective and unique solution called Sedu prom hairstyles. With a great variety of sedu prom hairstyles you can be natural, chic, formal, or have a vintage style, and have a new perfect look everyday! Natural Sedu Hair Style If you have a lack of time, or prefer to be natural at any occasion, then this style is a perfect match for you. It involves simple dress of some fall-down fabric like chiffon, silk, or satin. The dress may also be made of the combination of these fabrics. Perfect type of dress is full length with low neck and sleeveless. Such dresses are always elegant and need no further improvements by adding accessories. If you choose to add accessories, avoid anything heavier, than light gold or silver chain with small and neat pendant, or you risk to spoil you natural Sedu look. The make-up is as close to the natural make-up-free appearance as possible. Natural Sedu hair style is simple. The hair is either left lose and straight, with some curls at the bottom, or twisted into lose bun to express the naturalness of the image. Sometimes when hair is left lose it is better to pin up the framing tresses to show the face. To create this Sedu hair style follow these steps: 1. Wash and condition the hair; 2. Let it air dry, if you have time, or make a quick blow dry with the cool shot; 3. Apply some styling mousse and make cool blow dry for 3-5 min; 4. Use straightener to ensure that you have absolutely Sedu straight hair; 5. Make curls in, or out at the bottom of the hair, or pin the hair in the bun leaving framing tresses lose to add naturalness. Now you have absolutely natural Sedu style with fall-down full-length dress, and hair style that expresses the beauty of your natural image. These are two main reasons why natural Sedu hairstyles are also popular among celebrities: 1. It is hard to impress someone with sophisticated hair style or dress, but natural image is bound to attract attention; 2. Great tension of the moment, when all cameras clicking, and people shouting, leaves no space to the head ache, which is usual for many women when they have a lot of pins in the hair that secure the hairdo. The most popular celebrities that prefer to have natural Sedu prom hair style are Jennifer Aniston, Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff, and Angelina Jolie. They are well known for their simple, but elegant and smart styles that express their beauty. Chic Sedu Hair Style Such style is suitable for people who are not afraid to experiment. It usually involves some sophisticated hairdo, great and expressive dress with low neck, and expensive jewellery. It is easy to spot chic lovers among celebrities. Famous Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, and Charlize Theron are known for their fashionable Chic Sedu hair styles. Things you need to do to have Chic Sedu style are following: Pick up a dress that is made of luxurious fabric with stiff corsage, low neck, and fall-down skirt of any length. It is important that the dress should be of bright color, no pastel shades are suitable for chic style. Choose impressive accessories like big necklace and earrings. It would look good with low neck and updo. Take high-heeled shoes of suitable color to match the dress and accessories. If you have sleeveless dress you may also wear gloves, they will add to your chic image. Make-up should be bright, but suitable. Its role is to underline your image, and not to ruin it. Everything should be matching, and not necessary the colors of the season, because everything that matches your image is fashionable in Chic Sedu style. Create a complicated hairdo. It is usually the hardest thing from the list. But you wont have any trouble if you follow the steps below. To create a Chic Sedu hair style, follow these steps: 1. Wash your hair and condition it; 2. Make quick towel drying and apply some styling mousse; 3. Blow dry the hair until it is completely dry; 4. Straighten the hair to tame and make it smooth; 5. Divide off front hair; 6. Create a twist of the bottom hair; 7. Make side parting for the front hair and turn both parts around the bottom twist; 8. To add extravagancy leave framing tresses, and curl them slightly; 9. Add hair accessories, which may be jeweled pins or flowers of the season, or some slides with decorative ornaments. Now your Chic Sedu hair style is ready, and you have a look of world-is-at-my-feet: woman. Formal Sedu Hair Style Formal Sedu hair style is appropriate for special occasions like your in-laws parties, your friends wedding, or corporate parties. It needs some formal dress of pastel, or contrast colors, that is white, black, or their combination, low-heeled shoes, strict hair style and formal pastel make-up. Though it is rather old-fashioned, formal style is usually the best choice for any occasion, except for the friends disco parties or graduation ball. You have all comfort possible with simple and plain dress with knee-high straight skirt, and create impression of a serious and reliable person. Pastel make-up adds naturalness to the image, while low-heeled shoes give you the ability to feel your legs after long hours spent on feet. Sedu hair styles that go with this image should be simple, yet elegant, expressing your personality and beauty in every situation. The most popular hair styles are tight bun and low ponytail. To create a Formal Sedu hair style follow these steps: 1. Wash and condition your hair; 2. Let it air dry, or make a cool blow dry; 3. Apply some styling mousse, and blow dry the hair for 3-5 min with the cool set; 4. Make low-pony tail with some elastic band, twist the tail around the band and secure it with pins. Use no hair accessories, if you want to look absolutely formal, or add some jeweled pins for happy and friendly occasions, like weddings; 5. You may leave the pony tail lose, only hide elastic band under some neat hair accessory. After youve finished all steps, you receive formal Sedu hair style, which creates an impression of the beautiful, yet serious woman, who makes everything perfect in her life. Vintage Sedu Hair Style Vintage Sedu hair style is one of the latest innovations in the world of fashion. It is usually suitable for any celebrations and evening parties. The word vintage is French and its direct meaning is twenty years, but today vintage means some old fashion, brought up and renewed. For instance, Reese Witherspoons style at Oscars night this year is vintage. Her dress was of Victorian England style, and with matching hairstyle and pastel make-up it looked absolutely unique and adorable. To create a Vintage sedu hair style you will need: To pick up a dress model that was popular not less than 20 years ago; Renew this model to suit modern fashion tendencies in fabric and accessories; Create pastel make-up with colors that match the dress; Choose accessories and jewellery that add charm to the image. You may want to have a handbag and shoes of the style popular in the same time period as your dress; To create a Vintage sedu hair style, follow these steps: 1. Wash and condition you hair; 2. Make it air or blow dry; 3. Apply some styling mousse, and blow dry the hair for 3-5 min to remove any signs of uncontrollable hair; 4. Create any vintage Sedu hair style that will match your dress. Vintage Sedu style is very beautiful and remarkable for any occasions, especially prom. It creates a mysterious air around you, adds to your personality special charm and loveliness. It is very easy to create, and it really distinguishes you. Note that Sedu prom hair styles are not bound to those described above. Ive tried to collect and present the most popular ones that gain our affection and trust by their beauty and Sedu nature. Sedu prom hair styles are numerous and various, though all have common aim: to express the Sedu nature of the women and present them as one-of-a-kind personalities. Yarn In Your Medicine Cabinet?

By Maddy Cranley “Knit two rows and call me in the morning” is not medical advice you will see written on your doctor’s prescription pad, but if we take a closer look, knitting has some great benefits to your health and well-being. Knitting is a craft that is not only creative and mentally challenging, but is relaxing, productive, and a stress-reducer. We’ve all heard about the importance of exercise to keep our physical bodies limber and healthy. “The brain is like a muscle,” says Arnold Scheibel, M.D., head of U.C.L.A’s Brain Research Institute. “The more ways you use it, the more reserves you’ll build and the harder it will be for diseases to break it down.” The key to building your brain, says Marion Diamond, Ph.D., professor of Integrative Biology at the University of California at Berkeley, is to pick up something that is unfamiliar to you and unlike your normal routine … take up sculpture, painting, crossword puzzles, or work on a complex knitting pattern. (Family Circle Magazine) Now take my Aunt Hilda, who not only exercised her mental powers but decided to use knitting as an aid in curing a physical ailment. Having recently broken an elbow, impatient with weeks of slow recovery and plenty of discomfort, she went down to her local shop, bought some yarn and began to knit a sweater, finishing it within the week. To her delight, she showed off the new sweater with a pain-free elbow. She fully credits the exercise of the knitting in helping her elbow heal and increase its mobility. Not only is physical well-being at stake, but we are now aware of the importance of keeping mental stress at a low level in our lives. A survey of Vogue Knitting subscribers concluded that 59% of knitters knit for relaxation. The second most popular reason is the satisfaction that is attained from being creative. Joseph Primavera III, Ph.D., a psychologist who specializes in health psychology, states, “Knitting contains a nice mix of cognitive and behavioral techniques to help deal with stress.” While knitting, “you are relaxed, sitting comfortably, breathing easily, and you’re doing something you can enjoy. A sense of accomplishment comes at the end when showing off a new sweater.” (Prevention Magazine) This reminds me of a friend, who spends his days in front of a computer screen designing software programs. When he gets home, he likes nothing better than to relax by working on a complex Fair Isle pattern. Knitting is found to be a calming activity that helps to release built-up stresses from his daily routine. So take your medicine regularly – knit to your heart’s content, knowing that it is beneficial to your health. Let this wonderful craft be a continuum in your life, knitting through all the stages from baby clothes to grandchildren’s cardigans. Continue to enjoy its surge of creativity and take a meditative break from the stresses around us to reflect on something we knitters already knew – our beloved craft is good for us! Personalization of Mobile Phones

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Asre_Decosta]Asre Decosta Mobile phones have become an inseparable part of our lives and many among us want our handsets to be as distinct and different from others as possible. For this, we resort to personalization of our handsets. As a matter of fact, personalization or customization of new mobile phones is quite common among mobile phone users, whether they are from the UK or some other part of the world. Mobil phone users in the UK, regularly avail of attractive offers in mobile phone usage. They benefit from the latest contract mobile phone deals and are able to enjoy the sophisticated features and advanced functions of innovative mobile phone handsets at affordable costs. They avail of the best mobile phone deals and get to own the cheapest mobile phones. However, they are not fully satisfied, until and unless they add an individual touch to their handsets. This desire for personalization of mobiles can be easily fulfilled, with the availability of different options in the market. As a matter of fact, mobile phones can be personalized in different ways. The downloading of mobile phone ringtones is one of the most common methods of doing so. Phone users could also add mobile themes and download mobile screensavers and mobile phone logos in a bid to add an individual touch to their handsets. In addition, they can also purchase mobile phone accessories such as faceplates, covers, etc. that go with their mobile phones. Mobile phone users resort to personalization of handsets to make an impression; they also want the ringtones of their handsets to reflect their tastes and preferences. Even the most sophisticated handsets such as Nokia mobile phones have to be complemented by a mobile phone ringtone, a mobile theme or a logo of equal standing. Otherwise, the experience of using these handsets would remain incomplete. Antiques – An Introduction

By Michael Russell In the mid-18th Century, Roman antiquities became popular by way of home decoration. Pots, bronzes and statuary recovered from archaeological sites were all sought after items. In order for the gentry to accommodate these (it was only the gentry who could afford to), their houses and or gardens needed to undergo a complete remodelling. As a result, their old furniture and decorative items were stored in outhouses, attics and relegated to use by the servants. It is these items, which are now so eagerly sought after. In the early part of the 19th Century, people didn’t collect things just because they were old. They may have collections of books, manuscripts, coins or maybe maps but furniture was for storage, sitting on or sleeping on and paintings were usually family portraits. Other items such as porcelain and glass were also purely functional. However, later that same century, with Queen Victoria’s reign in full swing, her subjects began to take an interest in the origins of their possessions and that was the beginning of what we now know as the antiques industry. The definition of “antique” originated in the 1930s when American customs officers needed a yardstick by which to judge whether duty was chargeable on works of art. As mass production of articles had begun some one hundred years earlier, an antique was deemed to be something more than one hundred years old. Today, however, the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow defines an antique as “an older object valued because of its aesthetic or historical significance”, in other words a collectible. Obviously, there are those who deal in antiques for a living but even they may live a whole life in the field and never come across that elusive piece bought for a song and sold for a fortune. There are those, of course, who have what they call in the trade an “eye”; they have a natural ability to spot the “real thing” in the midst of a roomful of rubbish, but they are few and far between. For an amateur, the likelihood of striking it rich is even lower, so the best course of action is to collect what one likes. If one likes a piece, is happy to look at it on a daily basis and has paid a sum for it which one can afford, then it doesn’t really matter whether it will bring an undreamed of sale price. In most cases, an aged decorative item will increase in value. However, keen amateurs can disturb the market, as they did in the late 1980s, when Clarice Cliff pottery and lesser-known Impressionist paintings were in vogue. The market became flooded with the genuine and not-so-genuine and eventually, the bubble burst. It recovered in time of course, but too many people seeking items with not enough knowledge can cause a hiatus in the natural flow of buying and selling. If he concentrates on one type of item; paintings, ceramics, furniture, etc., then an amateur has a greater chance of building up the knowledge needed not to be fleeced by unscrupulous dealers. Experience and knowledge can be gained by studying books and the objects themselves or better still hanging around with an expert. Even then, the diversity of styles and periods will take a great deal of learning and of necessity, information will overlap. For example, in order to fully understand English Georgian furniture and recognise it, one may need to study Louis XIV and XV furniture as well, for the purposes of comparison. There’s nothing like experience, so the more time spent rummaging in antique shops and talking with the owners, the better. Embroidery Designs Testing for Machine Embroidery

By Terry Carter We have found a “new” way to see how well the stabilizers and methods you are using are working with so that your designs look GREAT without any off outlines, puckering, cupping or warping. This is a TEST – Only a Test – but if You and your stabilizers pass – You will have great looking designs. And if your methods and stabilizers don’t pass – you can just try again – Till you get it right. I think and recommend that we should test stitch all designs every time that we stitch-out any new design for the first time. With testing we get to see how the colors work out and whether we have used the right stabilizers and methods. After the test stitching – we can easily see if the outlines are off and if all the parts line-up – BUT – we don’t know if the fault is in the design itself or in the stabilizing. This is where our New “stabilizing test” is really useful. It can show us if we have used the right stabilizers and methods. It’s real easy – just baste a “picture frame” around the design. And when you are finished stitching – you can easily see if the basting stitch is still straight or if the design stitching has pulled it in – in some places and made the straight basting picture frame no longer straight. If it is not straight – then the conclusion has to be that either you used the wrong stabilizer for this fabric and design or that you didn’t use enough or in the right way (method). And conversely – If the basting frame stitch is still straight and the outlines are off or certain parts don’t line up – then the conclusion has to be that the stabilizers and methods used are OK – And the problem is the fault of the design. ( Of course in any test we need to make sure that everything is working properly and that we are using the right needle, have the right tension settings and ect.) Please let me know what you think about the “stabilizing test” above and if you tried it – and what the results were – I think is is a great idea – I wish that I could take the credit for it – but Sandy gets all the credit for this – But I can take credit for writing this and passing a good idea along. – I hope. Our designer and digitizer, Sandy Carter creates all our machine design patterns and takes the time to ensure that they will sew out easily and still be unique, distinctive and dimensional. Marketing Strategies – Making Indirect Marketing Work for You

By Rick Sheldon What is indirect marketing? It is quite different than its opposite, direct marketing. Indirect marketing is indeed a more passive strategy. It often times happens on its own through actions that are not as aggressive and/ or channeled as direct approaches. Direct marketing, on the other hand, is more self-explanatory. People employ direct marketing when they publish their ads in the papers, magazines, online, and on the radio. Direct marketing also takes advantage of direct mail operations and the cold calling method. Direct marketing means to literally take an active role in the selling process. Indirect marketing though does not involve a specific product or service or goal. With this technique, one is not intentionally working to push their work onto a prospective client. You are using indirect strategies when you perform a number of related activities, such as participating in community events, writing articles for publication, engaging in public speaking events, and posting blogs on the Internet. Similarly, existing clients who have had positive experiences with your company can also contribute to your indirect marketing through their word of mouth advertising. What business owner has not experienced some form of indirect marketing benefit? Surely you have had that certain phone call- the one in which an inquirer states that he or she is in need of assistance but is not sure if you are the one that can provide it. Many companies receive such calls, but handling them in a certain manner is crucial. In these situations, it is a good idea to begin by having the caller identify their issue. Then you can more easily analyze whether or not you can offer the product or service that would be of benefit. If so, describing the options that you provide is necessary, but what is more is that this can be done in such a way as to accurately match the description of what they are seeking. It might be appropriate to also explain several different possibilities that you are aware of that could serve their needs. Know that in this situation much of the credibility component of the business relationship has been established. You probably do not need to go into your background or qualifications. After all, the inquirer called your office. They basically already believe that you have the potential to assist them. With these types of interactions, the end result may not always evolve into a sale. Be okay with this. You may not have the solution required for their unique situation. Likewise, they may have reservations about pricing or other costs or financing. Sometimes people just need time to process and think about their options before they commit to purchasing. In any case, keeping the conversation helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable can make the difference. These random calls can be extremely affective to your business. It is always best to strive for the most positive experience on the phone as possible. The Ancient Fishing Secrets Are Still Here Today

By Willie Jones Fishing has been a part of our survival for as long as recorded history and probably much longer. Ancient cave paintings from 10,000 years ago depict fishing along with fish bone remains and animal bone hooks. Even ancient stone anchors are currently being displayed in museums. Everywhere on this planet, what ever culture, each has its own history in fishing and techniques, most of which are still used today. In fact, almost all ancient cultures have used boats, hooks, nets and spears of some kind. The ancient Romans used rods and lines, nets and spears. The ancient Greeks used rods and woven baskets and woven cages that stay under water where caught fish are kept alive until they are needed. Some cultures have been more creative than others and have very interesting techniques such as the night fishing in Japan. It is called cormorant fishing. It requires 7 to 8 cormorant birds that have handlers to train them. Once trained, they go out at night on a long narrow boat that has a long rod in front of it with a hanging basket that is in flames, the birds are each on a leash and are trained to dive down and catch fish, which they are experts in. This technique is still being practiced today and if you are for any reason going to Japan, you may want to sign up to see this phenomenon. In the Columbian basin, ancient tribal salmon fishers have past down a fishing technique that is still being practiced today. Tribal families for many generations have built wooden scaffolding that is very strong and stable that spans the river. This enables them to drop the nets that capture many salmon at one time. In the smaller rivers of the basin, dip nets are used because you can control them better. These nets historically have been made with hemp twine, sinew and tree pitch. These nets have a long pole attached to them and one stands in the water and scoops up the fish. In medieval Europe, V shaped structures were built to herd fish into waiting nets. Some cultures have used poisonous plants to stun fish so that it is easy to catch them. This is a dangerous practice and has been made illegal to fish this way due to the obvious safety issues. One does not want to risk eating a fish that has been poisoned. Fishing today is not only for survival but is a huge sport all over the world. But when you really look at it, not much has really changed in how we fish. The major difference really is in the advancements made in hooks and nets. How ever you fish, may the ones you catch be as big as the ones that got away. Willie Jones is a freelance writer, researcher, floral designer, and artist, for Art Inspires, Inc.
